Dogs are creatures of habit. Every part of their daily life revolves around an internal schedule and routine. They anticipate the return of their owners at a certain time of day and know that meal times occur regularly. Once trained, they will even exhibit certain behaviors to mark these times of day, such as bringing their empty food dish to their master or waiting near the door for their owners return. And finding the right way to teach your dog should not be difficult.

Dog Training Can be Fun

As a new dog owner and trainer, you may find yourself a bit overwhelmed at first. Do not be discouraged by this. It is quite common and shows a healthy concern for your pets well being. This being said there are a few very simple rules to remember when training your pet.

Rewarding your dog is the best motivator when training. It is well known that using rewards and other positive reinforcement when obedience training a dog is the most effective method and achieves the best results. You can make obedience training fun for the dog – and yourself too – by making a game of it. This makes both your dog and you, as the trainer, more willing and motivated to give it your all. Incorporate a period of play at the start and the end of each training session to ensure that the session ends positively. Teaching your dog to heel is the most basic of all the obedience commands. This refers to having the dog walk along with you on a loose lead. Heeling is generally the first obedience behavior taught to a dog, and it is easy to teach this using reward training.

Always give your dog lots of praise, treats, toys, and other rewards when he or she does what is expected. Dogs learn best when desired behavior is rewarded in a positive manner. Positive reinforcement means that when a dog does what the trainer wants, the dog receives a reward. This can be a pat on the head or a treat or toy of some kind. If the dog shows even the slightest attempt to please you, especially at the beginning of training, you should lavish positive reinforcement on him or her.

Dogs must learn to associate rewards with good behaviors and reprimands with undesirable behaviors. It is difficult to change any negative associations once they have taken hold. It’s easier to train the dog properly in the first place than to try and retrain him later. You should teach your dog to associate behaviors like coming when called, heeling, and sitting on command, with the happy and fun times you shared during training.

Obedience training will ensure a happy and healthy relationship between the dog owner and the dog. This is just another example of how important dog care is.

I have a 5 year old Brittnay and we rescued her she is the sweetest girl to humans and some SOME other dogs more like 1 or 2 but she shows agressive growling and like shes going to attack on most other dogs. How can i change this behavior becuase on walks i want her to be nice to other dogs and at my frends house. HELP PLEASE!

This isn't aggressive behaviour it is a sign that other dogs make your dog uncomfortable. Its defensive/fearful behaviour. Look into going to see a behaviourist that will do desensitization training with your dog. In the meantime to help with the behaviour every time your dog sees another dog and reacts like this give her a treat. This creates a positive reaction every time she sees a dog. Eventually she will look forward to seeing another dog b/c she knows she will get a treat. In works best if you use a "special" treat like a piece of cheese, carrot or meat.

Add: Please do NOT do what the person below me said about pushing your dog to the floor and making them be submissive this is very dangerous to do! And it can result in your dog biting you.

All dogs will need some training as without training, a dog will be a dog and do what dogs typically do. A dog training collar can help reinforce commands and signals and help the dog not only alter its natural behavior but also learn what the owner wants it to do.

Usually a dog training collar will emit a small shock when the person offering the training presses a button on the remote control. When the dog feels the shock, applied usually to the throat, and hears the negative command, chances are they will stop the behavior that resulted in slight pain. Once the dog understands that a firm no means a shock is coming, the dog training collar may not be needed.

If your dog barks a lot a dog training collar can shock the dog everytime the dog barks. Normally the dog will learn pretty quickly that if it barks it will be shocked and will decide that barking is not worth the pain. For those who shy away from shocking their animal, a no-bark dog training collar has been developed that emits a short spray of a lemon scented mist towards the dog’s nose. Its unpleasant odor will remind the dog not to bark, without the electric shock.

Shocks Can Help Guide Your Dog

Some dog owners and professional trainers are using electric dog training collars as part of a training regimen to help the dog learn new tricks, and not just to stay off the furniture and not to jump up on people. Usually if you slap your leg and tell the dog to come, you will probably get a dumb look. If you tell him to come and he gets a slight unpleasant shock, he may listen a little better.

If you are using a radio fence containment system you must make sure it is installed correctly and there is no threat of serious injury to your pet. Keep in mind that once your dog when wearing its dog training collar knows where its boundaries are even if you shut off the power to the underground fence, the dog will be reluctant to cross that line, even at your urging.

You should also keep in mind that a dog training collar is not something the dog needs to wear its entire life. Once their behavior can be changed by the issuance of verbal commands, the collar has done its job.

When my dog goes potty or pee-pee she does this kicking with all 4 legs. I praise her when she does this b/c I think its cute. I notice that she'll slowly put her head down and then kinda collapse, roll over on her back and then squiggle and squirm on the ground. She also makes noises too, its cute and I like when she does this too. What is the meaning of this behavior?
Ok people, she doesn't roll around in her own waste. That's disgusting and I wouldn't tolerate that.

The kicking you are describing sounds like scent distrubution. When ever she does that, she is throwing her scent in the air. Male dogs can actually smell a female in heat over a mile away. Amazing :o ) She is also rubbing her scent (or some other good smell in the ground) all over herself when she is squirming around. They like to smell like ANYTHING other than a clean dog, ha-ha!

There is an enormous variety of dogs to choose from. Important factors to consider are your lifestyle, your interests, and your present and future circumstances. You have to consider the difference between raising a dog from puppy hood and getting it as an adult.

Think about the benefits of male or female and whether you want a pet or a show dog. Consider the size – small dogs do not necessary require a big space but needs more exercise that big ones. You also need to decide whether to get a purebred, a crossbreed, or a random breed. Lastly, you should make sure that you are getting your new dog from a very good source.

Should I get a puppy or an adult?

The biggest advantage of getting an adult dog is that it is usually potty trained. You also will not have to guess its final size and personality. Although it may act very friendly around you, it is possible that it has hidden behavioral problems such as dislike of children. If you are planning on getting an adult dog, execute a small test in order to learn more about its temperament and personality. Observe the dog’s behavior as you approach it. You may want to walk it past another dog or a child that it has not met

before to see it’s reaction.

Puppies on the other hand are still at an impressionable and primary learning stage of life. You may even notice a difference in behavior of a 10 week old puppy from the rest of its litter. Each one will have its own distinct personality. The timid one usually clings

to their mother or may cringe in corners, while the outgoing one would march toward you in confidence. These two examples are the extremes of temperament within the litter.

Should a pick a male or a female?

Even before dogs reach puberty, there are six differences between the male and female behavior. Male puppies have masculine brains due to a surge of testosterone hormone right before birth. Female dogs are usually neutral in behavior until puberty.

There are some obvious differences in behavior between the sexes. Males are usually more likely to be dominant over their owners and act in an aggressive manner over other dogs. They are generally more active and more likely to protect their territories. Male dogs are known to urine mark their territories and to wander. They tend to be more

destructive, more playful, and are more likely snappy with kids.

Females on the other hand are easier to house train and obedience train. They also usually demand more affection from their owners. They have two heat cycles twice a year that comes with blood–tinged discharges that last about one week.

There is no difference between the sexes when it comes to defensive barking, nervous barking, or excitability. Neutering or spaying your dog will reduce and even eliminate many of these behavioral differences.

There are obviously more factors to consider when choosing a suitable dog but we have covered the major ones today. It is important to carefully look into every aspect of making the best choice before you get your pet – the new member of your

family.

When Marines enter an abandoned house in Fallujah, Iraq, and hear a suspicious noise, they clench their weapons, edge around the corner, and prepare to open fire. What they find during the U.S.-led attack on the “most dangerous city on Earth” in late 2004, however, is not an insurgent but a puppy left behind when most of the city’s residents fled. Despite military law forbidding pets, the Marines de-flea the pup with kerosene, de-worm him with chewing tobacco, and fill him up on Meals Ready to Eat. Thus begins the dramatic rescue of a dog named Lava–and Lava’s rescue of at least one Marine, Lieutenant Colonel Jay Kopelman, from the emotional ravages of war. From hardened soldiers to wartime journalists to endangered Iraqi citizens, “From Baghdad, With Love” tells the unforgettable true story of an unlikely band of heroes who learn unexpected lessons about life, death, and war from a mangy little flea-ridden refugee.
