Bad Dog Behavior: Why does my dog roll in poo and on dead animals when he gets the chance?

I don't understand why he would want the smell of a dead and rotten animal all over his fur and why he'd want another animals poo all over him!!! I can't stand it. I always put him on a leash but before I know it, he'll rolling before I can stop him. Please help me end this insane behavior….

some breeds do this more than others – usually working breeds or terriers. Its instinctual, and probably has to do with hiding their own scent.
but it can be trained out of him.

keep your yard clean every single day.
when walking, keep him on a short leash and pay attention to what he is doing. EVERY SINGLE time he drops to roll, say NO, and pull him back up immediately.
every time you catch him doing in your yard when not on a leash, yell at him and pull him away from the gross stuff.

you have to be very consistent and persistent or it wont work. dont expect him to stop doing it in a week or two.

Dogs are attracted by scents according to their own logic, not ours. I found my dog blissfully rolling in the grass at the park, and when I got closer, saw that it was on a dead fish. (Who leaves a dead fish on the lawn at the park??) She was thrilled – me, not so much! It's just something dogs do. Best you can do is have him under control on leash so that he can't go near the smelly objects.

Rather than "Bad Dog Behavior," it is completely "Normal Dog Behavior" and you should not punish harshly for it.

No one is quite sure why dogs do this (even wild canines do it), but some theorize that it's an attempt to hide their own scent. This would have little use to a domestic dog, but for a wild dog, like a wolf, not smelling like a wolf would be a big help in hunting. Our domestic dogs might do this out of instinct and nothing else.

Getting too upset will do you little good, because it's a behavior that is hard-wired into your dog's brain. Keeping him away from smelly things as much as possible would probably be your best bet.

I've lived in the country for six years now and my dog's have rolled in just about everything you can imagine. The good news is – this is normal dog behavior. The reason they do this is to mask their smell. Dogs are natural born hunters just like their ancestors (the wolves). In order to catch their prey they want to smell like their prey ie – to catch a deer I must roll in his feces and/or a dead carcass. Disgusting, yes, but natural.

How do you stop this behavior. ??? Can't help you there. If I see my dogs sniffing around I quickly tell them "NO" before they get the chance to roll. I keep a lot of those cleaning wipes from PetsMart around. I try to remind them they have plenty of food at home but sometimes they just won't listen. :)

Good luck and I hope you like bathing your dogs.

    Can't change an instinct!!

well you see in the wild wolves need to cover up there smell so there prey dont fret and run away, the scent of the prey's feces is familer so they oftine roll in that, also the scent of a decaying animal is strong and would definatly cover up any other scent,

well scence dogs are closly related to wolves, they have alot of the same instincts, so to dogs, and wolves, rotting and dung are erisistible

The people who say that that behavior is crazy have obviously never had a dog. That's very normal, I have no idea why dogs do it but every dog I've ever had does that. They like to roll in dead animals or anything else that smells bad. They're just dogs. Here's a little info I just found at http://www.school-for-champions.com.

Sometimes dogs will roll in the grass or in something smelly right after getting a bath. Some dog shampoos have perfumes that may be pleasant to humans but smell awful to the animal. It is just an effort to mask the unpleasant and un-dog-like odor.

"Wolves will often roll in decomposing carcasses or the feces of plant eating animals or herbivores. This would mask their own scent and enable them to sneak up on their prey without detection. It could even fool members of the other species into accepting it as one of their own. This ancient instinct may have carried over to domesticated dogs.

Another school for thought is that dogs may roll in smelly things to 'advertise' what they have found to other dogs."

You're fighting thousands of years of instinct. Dogs think all this is basically perfume. Eau de Pew! Roadkill is Chanel No. 5 to them. The leash is your best defense against this. Be glad you don't have Bloodhounds. The snout locks in on that stuff like radar! Dead carp at the beach is the stench of choice!
