How do I get rid of my dog's aggressive behavior?

My dog would bite and snap at people. Also when he would hide under the bed, for I guess he got spooked, I would try to get him out and he would bite me. When I got him at the pound he was 8 weeks old and didn't do the behavior test. Any ideas? thanks
My dog is now 4 years old and has bitten 10 people and not have been reported. He is a male Chihuahua/Dausande mix.

The type of aggression that you describe will not pass. The fact that he bit 10 different people suggests that the dog, although small, is still not under control. It is obvious that he has severe fear issues coupled with weak nerves. This type of dog is dangerous at best because you simply do not know what will set him off. I know you may not like this answer, but, putting him to sleep is the only option available now, before he bites a little kid and does real damage. Think about it.
Another reason to never get dogs from the pound. And another reason why good breeders charge so much for their dogs. Good luck and thanks in advance for any thumbs down I get. The truth is not always pretty.

When the dog retreats under the bed, don't go after it. You are in essence cornering the dog. he/she has no other choice but to defend themselves.

If you leave it alone and return later using a soft voice and easy movements you should be able to retrieve the dog.

As for biting people you have to scold and punish the dog when he does this. Make sure he knows that kind of behavior is not tolerated.

Also plenty of exercise will keep high strung or aggressive breeds calm.

You need to make him more comfortable around people. He was probably beaten as a puppy, so he is afraid of humans. But you need to resolve this aggression before it's too late. Take him to a professional trainer. Aggression is not something to ignore, it needs to be addressed. What type of dog is he? Breed could have a lot to do with it. Work on basic obedience and make him comfortable around people. But definitely take him to a professional trainer.

It sounds like he has fear aggression which one of my boxers had. The best way to deal with aggression is by getting a professional trainer. They can show you how to properly correct aggressive behavior and show you what you may be (unknowingly) doing wrong. It will be well worth the money when you are finished with the training and have a happy healthy dog and you don't have to have the stress of worrying if your dog is going to bite someone. Good luck to you and your dog. I hope this helps. : )

You have a potentially dangerous situation on your hands. First things, never every encourage this behaviour by your actions or your words. Do not play rough with the puppy, do not play tug of war. This encourages biting. Talk in a calming voice. When you feed your puppy, make the puppy sit put down the food dish, let him eat a bit, then take away food. Make the puppy sit again, then give the food back. This helps establish your alpha role. Spend alot of time in a quiet calm environment, petting, or brushing the puppy and talking in a calming voice. Gradually introduce new people into the calm enviroment. Good luck.

so how old is your dog now? hiding under the bed and biting usually means it's fear aggression. Any animal that is afraid and cornered will usually bite. When they crawl into what they think is a place they can defend and you reach into it, theyll bite. If they're fearful and strangers approach them the wrong way, they'll bite.

the cure is to develop the dog's confidence in himself, in you, and his comfort level in the world. The easiest way to do that is ith walking. Sounds silly, doesn't it? But it works.

Put him on a leash, and take him for a walk. Take him for a lot of walks. Expose him to different sights and sounds and people (don't let people try to touch him) while you're walking. You'll slowly start to see changes.

When you introduce him to people have him on a leash. The leash is a way to control him, but to him it's also a connection to you. Let him sniff them. Caution them to not talk to or touch the dog, and not to stare at him. Let him check them out at his own speed. When he relaxes they can talk to or touch him.

as to getting him out from under the bed, don't reach in there. Lure him out into a bigger space with a cookie or something. Once fear aggressive dogs are in a larger space they usually don't bite.
