My dog is afraid of the boarding places- how do we go on vacation?

Over the weekend, we tried to board our dog at a local, reputable kennel. He became overly nervous and aggressive. He is a very sweet and playful dog, but he is just absolutely fearful when he hears other dogs whining from behind a gate or fence. He does fine in his crate at home, he goes in it voluntarily. We had to pick him up because there was a possibility that he might bite a worker while they were caring for him (I don't think he would have, but we didn't want to take the chance). Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

well, you can try doing day trips. work him up to a longer stay. my old dog got extreamly scared when boarding after she had a horrible experience at our old place. they used to force her to have a bath and it finally freaked her out to the point where she refused to go in the building.

we had to find a new boarding place, eventually she got better since they didnt scare her, but they had to board her next to our other dog or else she would freak out whenever anyone went near the other dog. they had "caution in cage" for her file. she also was a very sweet dog otherwise. it was the strangest thing. but, once she got used to this new place and knew they werent going to hurt her or our other dog, she got much calmer about boarding. eventually she got to the point where she understood that she was going to the "puppy motel" and actually WANTED to go. it just takes time. lots of little trips helped in the long run, we would board them for thanksgiving or if we were having lots of company, just for the day so they wouldnt get underfoot. it did wonders. yeah, it wasted money, but in the long run it was worth it

Hire someone to come to your house and care for him.

Get an in-home pet sitter, they're available everywhere nowadays. Someone will come to your house several times a day (however many you request) to feed, walk, play, etc. It is a very good solution for dogs that don't like kennels.

You can pay a neighbor or friend to take care of him. They could either come to your house, or the dog can go to thiers

Many times dogs must go on day trips to boarding kennels to feel at home but you can get a dog sitter who pops in 2-3 times a day to let him out or possibly someone can board him at their home. I board my friends dogs and all my former fosters and they get the same care as my personal dogs. Your dog has a fearful temperament and you might want to consider training him, plus socializing him to diff places. Even stopping by the kennel to bring him to the office for cookies will help.

Some dogs don't do well at boarding kennels. Look into a pet sitter or leaving him with family or friends. I have also heard of some pet sitters who take the dog to their home which is much less stressful than a kennel. My dogs boards at his doggy day care and has so much fun he barely notices I an gone.

Put him in his crate and carry him there. Yes he will be terrified, but once you get where you want to go, all will be fine.

A professional petsitter will know how to keep your dog comfortabke in his own home – no need to subject him to what he considers 'dog jail'.

The best place to look for a good petsitter is by way of your vet. They know who is good and who is probably not – and there is a BIG difference.

Make sure you have them come and meet your dog while you are still home, and discuss what is included in the service and what would they do if your dog becasme sick or injured while you were gone. You must also make sure your vet has a permission slip to treat the dog in your absence as well, should you be out of cell phone range.

You may wish to have this sitter come and walk your dog a few times before you leave, so you get a feel for how they handele things, and whether your dog is comfortable with them. Feel free to ask for references.

Then, you should go on vacation and have a great time, knowing that your dog is probably having a fine time too.

I leave my border collie and my yorkie at home, it's the safest place for them to be. I have a neighbor boy who loves dogs, come take them outdoors 4X a day. (the yorkie is paper trained). Since I pay him well, if something comes up where he can't one time, his Dad steps in to do it. It's important to know the people you hire, you know they will take care. If not a neighbor, I would try a relative. Or if you can find a neighbor you can reciprocate the favor with. Take turns.

I've boarded some of my dogs only to have them come home with diarrhea, either from upset or something they caught – and this was supposed to be the best "pet resort" around. After the third time of this, we decided to get someone to come in a couple of times a day or just live in while we are gone, much less anxiety for the dogs – just has to be someone they know and like and whom you can trust.

Other option is to take the dogs with us – we have an RV just for that reason and often take them with us too. Hard to have a good time when you are worried about your pets, so make sure you find a solution that works.

We also pet set for friends' dogs sometimes, happy to help when we can. Maybe you can make an arrangmenet whereby you leave your dog with a friend and do the same for their dog when they go away.

yes, i have had this happen. i had a very sweet 6 month old mixed dog. she loved everyone. took her to the vet. to be spayed and they said she snapped at everyone there except one tec.! i was shocked. out of all my dogs, she was the last that i expected to do this. some dogs do not do well with a sudden chance in their surrounding. i would hire some one to come to your home like the other answers said. :)

Either take him on vacation with you or hire someone to come to your house to take care of him.
